F1. LABEIN's Commercial feeder

LABEIN main site in Derio (Spain) is connected to the MV network (30kV) through two three phase transformers (1000 kVA and 451 KVA) owned by the company, as well as the diesel units used for backup proposes.

LABEIN owns an Experimental Centre for the Development and Demonstration of Distributed Generation Technologies composed by a complete set of technologies and devices detailed later as follows:

F1.1 Generator Sets
Photovoltaic installations: single-phase 0.6 kW, single-phase 1.6 kW and three-phase 3.6 kW
The single-phase 0,6 kW pthotovoltaic installation is based on 13 UF42 modules (amorphous structure) and a SunnyBoy 700 Inverter. The second single-phase 1,6 kW pthotovoltaic installation is based on 16 Isofoton I-106CR modules (mono-crystalline structure) and a Xantrex SW 3024 Inverter. The three-phase 3,6 kW photovoltaic installation is based on 24 BP SX 150 S modules (multi-crystalline structure) and three SunnyBoy 1100 Inverters.

Diesel Generators: 2 x 55 kW (one of them with a controllable rectifier).
The diesel generator units consists of a diesel motor (John Deere – 55 kW) and a three phase synchronous generator (400V, 50 Hz, 63 kVA). The controllable rectifier accepts a 380 Vac 3-phase voltage and provides a external-controllable (4-20 mA) output from 540 Vcc to 780 Vcc 100 A maximum.

Microturbine MAGNETEK EG-50: 50 kW.
The EG system is made up of two main parts, the turbine generator and the AC-AC converter: The turbine is supplied with liquid fuel (gas-oil) and rotates at up to 60.000 rpm. The generator´s output is a 380 Vac 400 Hz 3-phase voltage which represents the input of the subsequent stage of the AC-AC converter. The AC-AC converter generates a delta 480 Vac 60 Hz or star 380 Vac 50 Hz.

Wind turbine INCLIN NEO 6000: 6 kW, 4m rotor.
Wind turbine with a nominal power of 6 kW equipped with a three blades rotor, automatic brake system by tilt up and neodymium magnet alternator.

F1.2 Network Simulator
Power electronics-based Generating System for simulating the electrical network
The system is composed by a Pacific Power Source 3060-MS which is a 62.5kVA/50kW Solid State AC Power Source providing a 3-phase voltage 228/132 Vac, up to 500Hz, a step-up auto-transformer to output 456/264 Vac and a programmable controller (UPC32) for simulation of transients in voltage, frequency and waveform, providing disturbances on the output to simulate harmonics and providing a programmable impedance in the output.

F1.3 Storage Devices
Flywheel UPS Caterpillar: 250 kVA
Uninterruptible power supply system based on flywheel energy (instead of batteries). It reaches full charge at 7.700 rpm (less than 150 seconds recharge). From 4.000 rpm the UPS is in normal operation regulating output voltage and supplying reactive and harmonic currents required by the load. It also provides constant power protection against surges, sags and power interruptions during 15 seconds at full capacity (250 kVA)

Ultra Capacitor: 2.18 MJ
Bank of eight ultra capacitor modules. Each module is rated at 4500 Farads and contains 360 kJ of energy, comprising a 48-V, 2.8 MJ storage system connected to a Line Interactive UPS. It is designed to provide up to 5 minutes at the nominal 5 kW power.

1120 Ah Battery Bank
Connected to a 24V dc bus from a photovoltaic installation, and coupled to the ac network (single-phase coupling) by means of a Xantrex SW 3024 inverter.

1925 Ah Battery Bank
Connected to a 48V dc bus from a photovoltaic installation, and coupled to the ac network (three-phase coupling) by means of three Xantrex SW 3048 inverters.

F1.4 Loads
Resistive load bank AVTRON K595: 55 kW
Resistive load bank AVTRON Millenium 150: 150 kW
Reactive load banks AVTRON K596: 2 x 36 kVA

 

F1.5 Power Converters
Prototypes for the grid connection and improvement of QoS (design by LABEIN)
In these prototypes new characteristics are added to the usual functionalities of the inverter, which help to increase the Quality of Supply (QoS) in the distribution grid and allow a higher penetration of DG units. These devices are refereed to as Custom Power. Different FACTS and Custom Power topologies have been analysed: the series and the parallel connected DGFACTS.

F1.6 Power Quality Analysis
Power Quality and Energy Monitoring System
DRANETZ-BMI Signature System is an integrated, web-based platform that allows users to remotely—and in real time—monitor their power systems. A Signature System incorporates multiple measuring and monitoring instruments called DataNodes reporting to a gateway/web server called an InfoNode.
The DataNode 5530 captures half-cycle RMS triggering on voltage and current, voltage and current transient triggering to 1µs, voltage and current harmonics, and interharmonics. The DataNode also can be set up to collect, trend and trigger on values from a list of hundreds of additional power quality, energy and process parameters.
The InfoNode 5500 offers a gateway to aggregate, process and view information from up to 32 DataNodes on a real-time basis, offering multiple communications paths for simultaneous access of up to eleven users. The InfoNode provides a user interface via a self-contained, password-protected web server. Protocols supported include TCP/IP, HTTP, UCA-2, and MODBUS.

Power Quality Analyser
LEM TOPAS 1000 is a portable Power Network Analyser for medium and low voltage networks. It measures THD, flicker, harmonics, inter-harmonics, transients, unbalance of voltages, ripple control signals. It allows also to the assessment of voltage quality as per EN50160 standard.

Universal Disturbance Analyzer
DRANETZ 626 G is a modularly expandable system (up to five modules can be installed) for measuring Surges, Sags, Spikes, Dropouts, DC Volts, Ac Current, Temperature, Humidity, Events, Plus Communications and Frequency Errors on DC and AC Power Lines.

F1.7 Test Equipment
Solar simulator ENDEAS OY QuickSun 400A.
The Quicksun cell tester uses a Xenon-flash lamp and has a class A rating according to IEC standard 60904-9. The Quicksun comes with a special feature to calculate electrical characteristics according to the two diode equation equivalent circuit of crystalline solar cells. This procedure provides information about the shape of the I-V curve.

 

F1.8 Tests
This network will be used to test centralised and decentralised control strategies in grid interconnected mode as well as communication protocols and components.

Energy trading issues will be also simulated following a market like behaviour because, accordingly to Spanish energy market rules, the test field mixes several generation technologies falling into the "especial regime" classification.
