TG1. Development of future scenarios and EU network data collection

Prerequisite before performing technical, social, economic and environmental analysis of the impacts of Microgrids on system performance is a thorough definition of the methodology (what needs to be analysed, which tools are available, which have to be adapted), a modelling of the Microgrid systems located in distribution and a collection of data on representative residential, commercial and industrial feeders.
A definition will take place what relevant technical performance indices have to be analysed at which level (regional, national, European, world). It will mainly comprises an analysis of reliability/security of supply, losses, power quality.
In order to quantify the benefits of Microgrids in the context of reliability of supply, relevant information about existing and future MV and LV network design will be collected and models of rural, urban and mixed circuits disaggregated with respect to various voltage levels developed, taking into account design characteristics of these networks, level of remote control and automation, protection philosophy, performance during adverse weather conditions, supply restoration strategies, fault response teams deployment strategy, etc.
In order to quantify the monetary benefits to network operators and electricity users, information about network maintenance strategy and cost, cost of alternative reliability improvement options, customer reliability characteristics and distributions, including statistics of interruption records and estimates of the customer worth of supply will be used.
Siemens, Manchester and ICCS/NTUA will design the studies to be performed.
ARMINES will implement the methodological framework developed in this Task in the form of a Geographical Information System (GIS) that will act as a decision support tool for decision makers, utilities etc to develop policies at regional level for the deployment of Microgrids. The aim is to evaluate in a realistic way the energetic balance together with monetary, technical and environmental benefits taking into account the constraints and alternative futures.
INESC will contribute to identify typical HV, MV and LV grids. Operational scenarios will be defined with Portuguese system operators (considering present structure and foreseen evolution). EDP will provide information about existing MV and LV networks, specifically characteristics of the MV and rural LV networks, which integrate the micro-generation system (Micro Turbine). It will provide data related to network failures, design characteristics, level of automation, protection philosophies and maintenance strategies. Furthermore, it will provide information related to the daily and seasonal consumption profiles. This data collection and analysis will be performed in collaboration with INESC.
Lodz Region Power Distribution Company with the help of the University of Lodz will contribute by:

  • Collection of information on existing and future MV and LV networks (technical characteristics, maintenance strategy, costs, operational parameters etc.) in Poland and Ukraine.
  • Selection of feeders suitable for introducing DER and the Microgrid penetration.
  • Analysis of expected technical-, economical- and sociological benefits (results) of Microgrid introduction to real distribution networks in Poland and Ukraine.
  • Prediction of the Microgrid penetration availability in Polish distribution networks.

Continuon will provide similar data from Netherlands.
MVVwill provide data from Germany.
ELTRA will provide data from Denmark.
Manchester will provide data for Great Britain.
ICCS/NTUA together with CRES will provide data from Greece.
CESI will provide data from the Italian system.
