TG3. Analysis of social, economic and environmental benefits (NTUA, Siemens, Manchester, Germanos)

This task performs an assessment of the social, economic and environmental impacts of a number of Microgrids in distribution that have already been selected for the technical analysis.
Economic analysis - Decrease of operational costs, increase of overall system efficiency
ICCS/NTUA with help of Siemens will evaluate the economic results from the different market options as well as the overall system efficiency prior and after Microgrids. It will use the software developed within WPB.
Germanos will provide information concerning economical benefits of the energy storage based Microgrid developed in TF5. These will include issues such as, power saving in peak demand times, improvement of cost and power quality, and data that shows the low impacts of the battery storage system to environment, as opposed to other generators systems that could be used in a Microgrid.
Environmental Benefits - Improvement of Energy efficiency
Operation of Microgrids will improve the overall efficiency of system operation. Manchester will quantify these benefits for actual systems of the UK and INESC for Portugal.
ICCS/NTUA will contribute in the evaluation of the Environmental benefits from the Microgrid operation based on the economic scheduling algorithms developed in WPB. It can also calculate the economic impact of optimising the operation of Microgrids based on environmental criteria and the possible financial benefits if penalties are to be imposed for exceeding emissions limits.
Siemens will additionally determine the improvement of energy efficiency for different supply scenarios. For this it will take its decentralised energy management system. In this system optimised schedules for the operation of all components of the Microgrid are determined in a central PC.
Similar to the input for the economic analysis Germanos will provide data of a Microgrid with battery energy storage devices (BESD) concerning environmental issues.
Social analysis- Jobs, Security of supply
Siemens will provide a general qualitative overview of the social benefits that can be provided by Microgrids.
