TF3 - Experimental Validation of Islanding mode of Operation (CRES)

In this task centralized and decentralized control strategies in islanding mode will be demonstrated using the LV grid of Kythnos (Gaidouromantra).

SMA will upgrade the latest generation of island inverters. It will replace the "classical" Sunny Island 4500 with next generation of Sunny Island inverters, capable to deal with the strenuous conditions of islanded mode control. The system of Kythnos comprises 3 SunnyIslands + SunnyIsland Control and possibly a generator management interface. In addition, SMA will install a 5kW aero smart wind energy converter. ISET, CRES and SMA will monitor the performance of the system for one year and analyze its measurements.

ICCS/NTUA together with CRES, ISET and SMA will install and demonstrate the software for centralized and de-centralized control, as adapted for Kythnos in WPB.

ANCO, ICCS/NTUA and CRES will install and demonstrate the functionalities of the intelligent load controller developed in WPA. ICCS/NTUA and CRES will monitor and report power quality issues of the Kythnos Microgrid. CRES will perform a study for the connection of the Gaidouromantra Microgrid to the Kythnos island medium voltage grid. The technical and operational issues and solutions will be addressed as well as the legislative issues in order to connect the Microgrid in a functional and safe manner to the Kythnos island medium voltage grid. Results of this study will be used in WPH.
