TF5 - Experimental Validation of Islanded Microgrids by means of smart Storage (coupled by Flexible AC Distribution System) (Continuon)

Continuon will test its holiday-parc in islanded operation based on FACDS (flexible AC Distribution systems, by means of power electronics) and a storage system. One of the key aims of these devices is to improve power quality. More specifically, the following will be tested:

  • An Islanded Microgrid (as long as possible)
  • Improving the voltage level
  • Improving the voltage shape (less harmonic distortion)

Germanos in cooperation with EMforce will design, develop and test a smart Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) according to the requirements of Continuon and will install it in this Task.
More specifically, Germanos is going to accomplish the following tasks:
Installation
1) Technology of the energy storage system (ESS) that will be used
2) ESS characteristics
a. Capacity of battery cell
b. Capacity of battery system
c. Number of cells that will constitute the strings
3) Development of the energy-storage based Microgrid
Test
1) Rated and initial capacity will be verified
2) Application-specific testing, consistent with the intended system use will be applied to determine the suitability of the ESS for actual field implementation.
Study of controlling and regulating factors that would affect battery cycle life and discharge/recharge performance, i.e. temperature, and depth, rate and number of discharge cycles, recharge methodology and self-discharge.
EMforce will perform the following tasks:
1) design the topology of the battery/converter system
2) design, manufacture and test the power converters and control equipment
3) implement into the power converter the control structure that ensures optimal operation of the battery system
4) implement control agents permitting exchange of information with the Microgrid central controller
5) design and implement the Microgrid central controller on a PC platform
6) design, manufacture and test the interconnection switch between Ìicrogrid and utility grid
7) In cooperation with Continuon and Germanos, develop test specifications and perform tests to verify the intended performance of the Ìicrogrid and its components.
